Polyphosphates improve the overall efficiency of many mining processes.
Copper Ore Beneficiation
Small amounts of sodium tripolyphosphate (STPP) can greatly improve the overall efficiency and economics of the froth flotation process for copper ore beneficiation and setting accelerator for shotcrete applications. Increased copper recovery due to improved behavior has been noted (i.e., finer grind) at a given feed rate of solids to the unit, followed by an improved copper recovery. Tetrasodium pyrophosphate (TSPP), sodium tripolyphosphate (STPP) or sodium hexametaphosphate (SHMP) all have utility as deflocculants in grinding, classification and separation processes. They can be used to advantage in most aqueous systems resulting in more efficient operations, often at reduced costs.

Clay Processing
In the mining of clay fields, ICL polyphosphates are used to provide dispersion functionality to high-solids slurries of kaolin-type clay. These slurries are often pumped over long distances to secondary operations in the manufacturing process. The use of small amounts of polyphosphates can provide low viscosity to an otherwise viscous slurry.
 
Drilling Muds
Water-based oil drilling fluids or muds are also used in drilling for water or gas. Drilling muds that contain mineral weighting fillers require close control of their visocosity properties to function properly. ICL sodium hexametaphosphate (SHMP), sodium tripolyphosphate (STPP), and sodium pyrophosphates provide maximum dispersion of filler ingredients while also providing some corrosion.

Sodaphos® Sodaphos® is sodium hexametaphosphate of a relatively short chain-length. It is used in water treatment, pigmenting and dyeing operations, film development, drilling muds and kaolin clay processing, among others.
Sodium Hexametaphosphate Attributes: sequestration, deflocculation, infinitely soluble, corrosion inhibitor, and the chelation of calcium and iron.
Sodium Tripolyphosphate Sodium Tripolyphosphate (STPP) is a very effective sequestering and dispersing agent. It finds application in many industrial applications, including cleaning, water treatment, and many others.
Tetrasodium Pyrophosphate Tetrasodium pyrophosphate (TSPP) is an effective sequestrant and dispersing agent used in detergents, clay processing, drilling muds, cements, water conditioning, textile processing, paper manufacturing, bleach bath stabilizer and metal cleaners.
