Refractories

Phosphates and phosphoric acid solutions provide a continuously strong bond over a wide temperature range in refractory applications. Aluminum compounds are used for manufacturing of refractory materials.

Phosphoric acid is an excellent bonding agent for high-alumina refractory products. Phosphates are formed having a continuously strong bond over a wide temperature range. ICL phosphoric acid can also be used to bond magnesia, zirconia and carbon refractory brick products. When used to bond magnesia refractories, the reaction between phosphoric acid and magnesia is very rapid and suitable precautions must be taken.

In the case of magnesia-based refractory gunning mixes, where a low temperature phosphate bond is needed to set the refractory upon application to a hot furnace wall, less acidic forms of phosphate are preferred. Depending upon the given refractory mix formulation and application equipment, acid orthophosphates as ICL monosodium phosphate (MSP) and monopotassium phosphate (MKP) are added to the product formulation together with a polyphosphate as ICL sodium hexametaphosphate (SHMP).

Aluminum compounds (aluminum sulphate, sodium aluminate, and DH Sol) are used:

  • As setting accelerators for alumina cements
  • For increased green strength
  • For the increase of viscosity and prevention of sedimentation in ceramic slurries and enamels

Glass H® Glass-H is a long-chain form of sodium hexametaphosphate. It is effective as a sequestrant and dispersant in several applications, including: water treatment, detergents, clay manufacture, oil well drilling muds, refractories.

Sodaphos® Sodaphos® is sodium hexametaphosphate of a relatively short chain-length. It is used in water treatment, pigmenting and dyeing operations, film development, drilling muds and kaolin clay processing, among others.
Sodium Acid Metaphosphate Longest chain length Sodium Hexametaphosphate. Sequestration, deflocculation, infinitely soluble, corrosion inhibitor, chelation of calcium and iron.
Sodium Aluminate 53/55% Product for the production of catalysts and aluminium compounds. Formulation aid for production of colours, titaniumdioxide pigments, refractory products, enamels and cement bound masses. Setting and hardening accelerator for cement bound systems.
Sodium Hexametaphosphate Attributes: sequestration, deflocculation, infinitely soluble, corrosion inhibitor, and the chelation of calcium and iron.
Sodium Tripolyphosphate Sodium Tripolyphosphate (STPP) is a very effective sequestering and dispersing agent. It finds application in many industrial applications, including cleaning, water treatment, and many others.
Tricalcium Phosphate Flow control agent, anti-corrosion pigment, ceramic system filler. Functional addtive for some formulations for sensitive teeth.
